(Zemindar-Artist, Bengal School) / Born: May 3, 1849 -Died: March 4, 1925'. (Catalogue and
price list dated May 3, 1944. The catalogue lists a total of 1572 original works by Jyotirindranath
Tagore executed between 1870 and 1925. In the Introduction Mukul Dey wrote: "A considerable
number of original pencil drawings are in this collection…Most of the drawings are dated and
autographed by the sitters…these remarkable, delicate and unique portrait drawings should be
regarded as a national art treasure of India and carefully preserved and studied." Incidentally, it
was Jyotirindranath, who was one of the earliest inspirations of Rabindranath Tagore in his artistic
efforts…unfortunately, however, this sensitive artist remains yet undiscovered by the Indian art
lovers. During early 1950s this massive collection of original Jyotirindranath Tagore drawings
were sold to Rabindra Bharati of Calcutta…where these were left to rot for next fifty years. This
document apart there are no comprehensive catalogue of Jyotirindranath Tagore's works.-Ed.). |

Musicologist / artist / philosopher Alain Danielou and photographer Raymond Burnier had visited
India travelling overland from France during early 1930s. Danielou was instrumental in sending
Christine Bosseneck to Santiniketan, and introducing Pandit Ravi Shankar to Europe in 1958. The
translation documents the extraordinary observation of Danielou wherein he had recorded the
"rape" of Santhal women as a form of amusement by Santiniketan students. The memoir provides
a wealth of information on India with a special reference to Tagore's Santiniketan during
